Private views in Paris: Korean artists and Marie Hugo (written by Heidi Ellison)

The latest trend in Paris is “hidden art exhibitions.” Last weekend, two new shows opened in handsome private apartments, both of which can be visited by appointment: 12 contemporary Korean artists in the 16th arrondissement , Marie Hugo's paintings in the seventh.

In the 16th arrondissement, journalist Sunhee Choi and Jari Lager, director of Union Gallery in London, have staged an excellent show of the work of 12 contemporary Korean artists (on show through June 17, call 06 23 95 07 32 to make an appointment).

'Full Lake' (2012) by Haeri Yoo.

Among them painter Haeri Yoo, whose work is part of the Saatchi Collection in London, and Shan Hur, whose installations make us think about what is art and what is not.

In another posh area of Paris, the seventh arrondissement, the paintings of Marie Hugo are being shown by Galerie sans Murs (through April 29, to make an appointment: galeriesansmurs@gmail.com or 07 87 64 94 53) in an elegant, high-ceilinged 18th-century apartment complete with boiseries, crystal chandeliers and the original 18th-century wall paintings.

Hugo, the great-great-granddaughter of Victor Hugo and daughter of painter Jean Hugo, makes beautifully simple, almost calligraphic black-and-red-ink paintings on paper and canvas.http://www.mariehugo.com
